The Mayans

The Mayan Civilization was a great empire. It consisted of natives who lived in Mesoamerica, Guatemala, Southern Mexico, Central America, and in the Yucatan peninsula. They mostly ate corn, their number one food source, and meat. Thriving 1,000 years before the Aztecs, the Mayans’ 4,000 year-old settlements had a very rich culture. They spoke more than 30 different languages, and felt very in debt to their gods. As a result, they built many monuments and temples for them. They had pyramid-like temples which alligned with the sun, moon, and stars. The Mayans used the stars to tell stories of the god as well. However, hidden under these great deeds was something horrific which the Mayans thought was an honor. Sacrifice, or killing others to please the gods, was an action done eighteen times a year. Despite this sad truth, the Mayans were still very successful in creating a large and strong empire. They were great scientists and mathematicians too. The Mayans were...

There are various celebrities in our society which act as a perfect example for many to follow. Liking famous people like these should help us to live a more beneficial life, proving that most celebrities positively impact us and our society...

The Cookie Curse

(This is a twist in the story of Disney's Aladdin, written from the genie's perspective for a school project.) Written by: Kashika Bharol     A long time ago I was in a Chinese restaurant in Arabia eating my white rice. The waitress came up to me and gave me a fortune cookie.  I cracked the fortune cookie, which contained a note which was more like a message than a fortune. It said, "You will become a genie”. I regarded it as just a silly note. But when I got home and started to light the golden lamp my mother gave me for my birthday, Whoosh! I'm stuck in a lamp. So I practiced and practiced being a genie and granting wishes, waiting for someone to rub my lamp. Little did I know, that it would take hundreds of thousands of years.     So it was a regular day, just like any other, and then I heard a rumble. Much like the one my stomach makes when I'm hungry, but louder. Once the rumbling stopped, the footsteps started. Then those s...

Top 5: Middle School Survival Tips

Tip #1: Never try to change yourself. Your friends might start wearing designer clothing, breaking school rules, or even doing illegal stuff. NEVER change yourself to impress these people. Remember that a true friend would never want you to change yourself, and will like you for who you are and not what you wear. Tip #2: Always do your homework, please. If your teachers are very strict about homework and it counts for a lot of your grade like me, do it. It raises your GPA (if it counts for a lot of your grade), and it also impresses your teachers. Remember that teachers like students who are respectful, obedient, and do their homework. Tip #3: Always be ready. If the consequence for not bringing in your textbooks, homework, or even backpacks is detention, then that is a huge price to pay for irresponsibility. You don't want to waste your time for detention after school, or even at recess, right? Tip #4: Choose your friends wisely. This is ...

Riding a Bicycle

By: Kashika Bharol When the leaves of autumn were beginning to fall, With me, my parents went to the mall. We shopped at the stores, left and right, Until finally they found me a bike. It wasn't very big, It wasn't very small, It was the perfect size and I was going to ride it Once and for all. I was scared for this day, I knew it would come. Hands on the handles, feet on the pedals, I couldn't feel my toes, and my fingers were numb. But I pushed my right foot forward, Left foot back, Hands clenching the handles, This isn't so bad! And that was the day, I learned to ride a bike. Soon I figured out that it wasn't such a fright!

When It's Time

By: Kashika Bharol In the future, when it's time time to leave the nest, Will you act like the rest? Or will you fly  To new heights And achieve the things in the sky? Will you sit out back and wait for things to go your way? Or will you work hard day by day? Basically, what I'm saying is Are you going to be lazy or doing something? Where will you be  when it's time? I will be in a hospital Hope to be known as prodigal In a doctor's room Helping others escape the tomb. By saving their life, I will do a great deed And help the patient live with great ease. When it's time Time to leave the nest, A doctor is what I'd like to be, at best.
